From 1958 to September 2008 an organisation affiliated to the Sailors’ Society operated the Bay of Plenty Seafarers Centre in Hull Road, Mount Maunganui, just outside the port gates. The United Seafarers Mission was later formed and operated, in parallel with the Sailors’ Society, from rented premises just inside the port gate.

 In September 2008 the Society’s building was sold to the Port Company and the Bay of Plenty Seafarers Charitable Trust formed. This trust, administered by Guardian Trust, now supports the United Seafarers Mission – a partnership between a number of churches and seafarers welfare organisations –  in the port.
